The vicious circle of the food system

Christophe Alliot, president of BASIC, was yesterday at the International Conference of Researchers and Farmers organized until this evening in Brussels by the European Coordination Via Campesina, Université Libre de Bruxelles and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He presented our latest work on the French food system.

Indeed, our findings on the vicious circle at work are valid for the rest of the European Union: public authorities pour money into an economic system made up mainly of value chains based on low-price competition that puts farmers at a disadvantage; these value chains cause social and ecological problems (low wages, diseases, pollution) that force public authorities to pour money back in to alleviate the effects.
